Many others have assembled their own version of this ancient material since, and it is important to realize that it is the contents rather than the book itself that make up the Lesser Key. Traditionally, the source material is divided into five books: Ars Goetia, Ars Theurgia Goetia, Ars Paulina, Ars Almadel, and Ars Notoria. Mathers and Crowley indicate their edition is a translation only of the first book: Goetia.In the preface to this edition, it is explained that a “Secret Chief” of the Rosicrucian Order directed the completion of the book. The original editor was a G. H. Fra. D.D.C.F. who translated ancient texts from French, Hebrew, and Latin, but was unable to complete his labors because of the martial assaults of the Four Great Princes. Crowley was then asked to step in and finish what the previous author had begun. Traditionally, S. L. MacGregor Mathers is credited as the translator of this edition, and Crowley is given the title of editor. The KJV is the gold standard of Bible versions, with a gravitas and mystique not present in other versions, but reading it can be rough going in places. In the KJRV I have tried to create a version with the best of all worlds—an easily understood version that retains the feel of the KJV and accentuates its poetry, plus includes details and nomenclature missing from the KJV that are found in the earliest translations, and in other versions.My method was to start with a verse of the KJV, then consult 34 other versions as I created what I believe to be the most faithful, accurate, readable, and poetic version possible of each verse. The KJRV is formatted like an epic poem, and feels like you are reading the King James Version, but with more immediate understanding. The verse numbers are in a separate column so as not to interfere with flow, and the content is broken into paragraphs to aid comprehension. It is my intention that the KJRV speak directly to the reader, and provide a clear understanding of exactly what’s being said, without the aid of commentary, religious dogma, or agenda-driven interpretations.
