En octubre de 1985 llegué becado a la URSS, era el primer año de Gorbachov como primer Secretario del Partido Comunista sovietico después de la muerte de Andropov y Chernenko. El desastre atómico de Tschernobyl estaba por ocurrir (a 600 kilómetros de mi escuela). La URSS seguía siendo la segunda potencia mundial y el mundo estaba dividido.La URSS era un país cerrado que no permitía a sus ciudadanos cruzar sus fronteras para salir y era prácticamente imposible entrar.Yo tenía entonces 21 años y era la primera vez en Europa. Antes ya había cruzado 2 veces la frontera mexicana en un intercambio estudiantil en los EE. UU. pero no sabia en realidad lo que son las fronteras. En esa edad yo no tenía ninguna conexión con el mundo socialista. Me aceptaron simplemente porque quería estudiar geofísica estructural. Llegué completamente libre a seguir mis propios sueños y los intereses que un chico de mi edad en los años ochenta tenía ante sí. Al término de mi primer año de estudios todos los estudiantes se van a trabajar a las granjas colectivas, Yo siendo proveniente de un país “libre” sin fronteras me permiten obtener una visa para salir del país. Yo tenía una amiga por carta en Austria a quien le había estado escribiendo desde hacía ya 6 años atrás y no la conocía en persona. En esos años el correo postal era la única manera de comunicarse a nivel mundial. Por ello decidí ir a visitarla y cruzar la frontera de las fronteras: la frontera entre la URSS y Europa occidental.Con muy poco dinero pero muchas ganas de disfrutar, viajar y descubrir a la vieja Europa de los años 80s me hice al camino. El viaje me llevó por Alemania, Austria, Italia y Yugoslavia a pie, en autostop y en bicicleta.
