No Reformed theologian prior to Charnock treated God’s existence and attributes with such clarity and depth—in fact, his was one of the first works solely devoted to the subject to appear in the Reformed theological tradition, and has become a standard work on the subject. His positions have been echoed and refined by generations of theologians, and most recently have contributed to contemporary debates over free will, foreknowledge, and the openness of God.No doubt the sheer size of the volume has caused not a few persons to direct their reading efforts elsewhere. This is regrettable for a number of reasons, not the least of which is Charnock’s ability to combine rigorous theological discourse on the doctrine of God with the typical Puritan emphasis on “uses” of the doctrine (relating doctrine and life). His work has much value on a practical level, which should be the goal of all theology.Charnock studied at Cambridge and was later made senior proctor at Oxford from 1652–1656. The first three categories address the doctrine of God in the strict sense. The fourth topic concerns the outworking of the divine decree and has an obvious relation to the previous three headings. The Trinity (i.e., the three persons of the Godhead) has its own category because Reformed theologians often spoke of “God” in a twofold sense: essentially and personally. Essentially, “God” refers to the divine essence or substance; personally, “God” refers to each (or all) of the three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. After Shivaji`s death, Sambhaji fought against his stepmother, Soyarabai Mohite, who had her son Rajaram crowned as the heir to the Maratha kingdom. Sambhaji escaped prison and formally ascended the throne on 20 July 1680. A brilliant tactician, Sambhaji was worthy of the throne of the Marathas, although his rule was short-lived. Swami (Master) The Maratha (non Muslim) empire established in Maharashtra by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (d. 1680) against all odds later passed into the hands of the Peshwas (prime minister) who became the supreme lords. The Maratha Empire which stretched across a sizeable portion of Western, Central and Northern India suffered a severe setback when the Marathas lost the (Third) Battle of Panipat in 1761. It was an immense loss of men, money, and material. The then Peshwa Nanasaheb could not bear the brunt of the casualties which included his eldest son and younger brother, and soon passed away. For the sixteen year old Madhavrao who succeeded Nanasaheb, it was not a piece of cake. The coffers were empty, the royal court was fraught with internal dissensions. Madhavrao could not go along with his uncle, Raghunathrao, who wanted to be the Peshwa, and went to any extent including looting his own subjects. The Nizam, Hyder, and the British had set their eyes on the Maratha empire. Swami is based on the life and character of Madhavrao who resurrected the Maratha empire. He revived the lost glory and pride. The extent of the empire was now wider than before. He contained the enemy. Swami sketches the personal life of the Peshwa and specially poignant are the parts covering the discomfort he feels when Raghunathrao is a thorn in his flesh, and his untimely death. The novel throws light on the political, social and cultural history of the mid Peshwa era. The portrayal of the bond between Madhavrao and his wife, Ramabai, is a special feature. Ranjit Desai (1928-1992) tackled the genre of novels with such ease that his collection includes all types of novels: historical, social, mythological, and biographical. On July 24, 1715 a Spanish treasure fleet of ten frigates sailed from Havana carrying a cargo of 14 million pesos in gold, silver and jewels. In the Florida Straits near present day Cape Canaveral the fleet ran into a hurricane. The storm battered the ten ships unmercifully. One after another the vessels ran aground and were torn apart by the storm. Tons of iron cannons, bars of silver, chests of silver coins and gold doubloons were scattered over the sand and lime rock bottom as the ships slowly disintegrated. Over 700 people lost their lives in the tragic event.Survivors were eventually saved, and Spanish salvors recovered some of the treasure. But the bulk of it was lost for the next 250 years. In the early 1960s people began finding odd-shaped pieces of corroded metal on the beaches opposite the wrecks. Many were skipped back to sea. Until one curious fellow named Kip Wagner found that these odd blackened lumps were actually corroded silver coins. With a friend named Kip Kelso he did some research and soon realized there was a lost treasure fleet and all it carried scattered for miles along Florida’s southeast coast.Wagner formed a company named Real Eight obtained an agreement to salvage the treasure with the State of Florida overseeing the operation and getting 25 percent of all finds.Thus began the biggest treasure hunt of the century. Author Robert Burgess and State Marine Archaeologist Carl Clausen in charge of the recovery program wrote the definitive book on the history of the fleet and the treasure recovery.In this e-book by Robert Burgess, he reveals information about the treasure and its recovery that was purposely not available to the public at that time. One aspect had to do with the computer generated scatter patterns of treasure recovered from certain of the wrecks. That pattern touched certain beaches for over a mile. This meant that all beach finds were treasure trove or finders keepers, while everything in the water out to the three-mile –limit belonged to Florida and the lease holders.In time most of the treasure was recovered and salvors such as Mel fisher moved to Key West to look for the treasure galleon Atocha, which he finally found. Meanwhile beach combers continue to find treasure on the beaches opposite the 1715 wrecks.Author Burgess provides us with a brief history of this treasure fleet and in over 200 color photographs made during this period of treasure recovery he shows us the treasure and how it was found. Included in the text he takes us diving on one of the least damaged wrecks and later provides a translation of the 1715 fleets’ manifests detailing how much treasure these ships carried. Finally there is a wonderfully detailed analysis of Florida’s treasure finds and what the markings on gold coins, bars and ingots tell us about their age, quality and origin. Readers will be interested to note exactly how much treasure was carried by the combined fleet, and how much the state recovered after division. Because all these riches were scattered from Sebastian Inlet to Fort Pierce, coins and other invaluable artifacts will be appearing on these beaches for an untold number of years to come. And like one trio of skin divers looking for lobsters and finding instead a golden glove tray in shallow water just offshore, no one knows where or for how long these items will keep appearing. The tray which became a centerpiece for the treasure display at Tallahassee’s Florida Museum was appraised at $23,000. The lucky finders were given that value from the state’s portion of gold coins. Beaches opposite these sites are still turning up these kinds of finds, but no one talks about them for obvious reasons. Burgess takes us to those hotspots. The Women of Ville-Marie is a history of the founding and early years of Montréal with an emphasis on the lives of the French women, the ordinary and the prominent, who came and settled at Ville-Marie (later known as Montréal) in the seventeenth century. These women left families, friends, and the familiar behind. They bravely crossed the Atlantic, hoping to find a life in New France better than what they could expect in the old country. Many were young and single or widowed and seeking a husband. Along with the men, they established Ville-Marie in the middle of the wilderness. They put their lives on the line in times of great danger and uncertainty. Most survived, and some thrived. This is a thoroughly researched and well-cited work of nonfiction offering historical background and context for the lives of these heroic pioneer women.In the spring of 1642, Paul de Maisonneuve and Jeanne Mance, along with some forty French settlers, set foot on Montréal Island and founded Ville-Marie, intending to establish it as a model Christian community. Eight years later, the settlement had only about fifty settlers. It was difficult recruiting men and women to settle in this fledgling colony. Ongoing conflict with the Iroquois Confederacy and the brutally cold winters were powerful deterrents to settlement on the island. Survival of the colony was often in doubt. The efforts and determination of those committed to staying eventually paid off. Slowly, the settlement took root, with an economy based on the fur trade. By 1715, Montréal, as Ville-Marie had come to be known, was a thriving frontier town of nearly 5,000 inhabitants, eagerly embracing the possibilities of the eighteenth century.
