This book is an overview history of the General Motors Electro-Motive Division GP7 and GP9 model diesel locomotives on the C&O. These locomotives were the backbone of C&O's first diesel fleet and were the main replacements for its freight-service steam power. Many were later used by B&O after its affiliation, and some survived into late Chessie System and early CSX eras. All were gone by the mid-1980s. They were the quintes-sential C&O freight diesel of the 1950s and 1960s. This book covers their history and presents a color album showing them at work across the system. Read more

Richmond County and the Seaboard Air Line Railway presents vintage photographs by talented photographer Frederick "Frank" Marchant (1872-1942). The images document the bustling railroad town of Hamlet and the county seat of Rockingham in North Carolina during the first quarter of the 20th century. Marchant, a native of Pennsylvania, arrived in Hamlet in the early 1900s. By 1907, he was working as a commercial photographer and as the official "picture taker" for the railroad company. Marchant developed a keen eye for interesting subjects, and some of his work took on a photojournalistic quality. His photographs, many of which he published as postcards, record rail activity in the Hamlet area, which became the "hub" of the Seaboard Air Line. Read more

Marshall Pass atop the Continental Divide is one of the "great gates,: as historian Marshall Sprague called the Rocky Mountain passes. In the early 1880s, General William Jackson Palmer's Denver and Rio Grande raced Governor John Evans's Denver, South Park and Pacific to reach the booming Gunnison country, tap the mineral wealth of the San Juan Mountains, and attempt to become a transcontinental route. Thanks to Marshall Pass, the Rio Grande won the race and for seven years was the only transcontinental line through Colorado. Always a narrow gauge, Marshall Pass eventually lost its rails to the Rio Grande's standard gauge route over Tennessee Pass and the paved highway over Monarch Pass. But the rigorous terrain, unforgiving locomotives and a cast of colorful personalities from Otto Mears to postmaster Gus Latham, Marshall Pass remains at the center of Colorado's railroad heritage. The picturesque town of Los Gatos stands between the once verdant orchards of the Santa Clara Valley and the forested slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The narrow-gauge South Pacific Coast Railroad arrived in 1878 and, within two years, laid track over the mountains to carry passengers, redwood, and tons of ripe produce. Less than a decade later it was purchased by Southern Pacific, and completely converted to standard gauge by 1909. Invigorating business and industry, the railroad remained a vital part of the economy of Los Gatos for over 80 years. Although the era of commercial rail ended in 1959, Billy Jones and his scaled-down Wildcat Railroad" still offered weekend rides at his ranch to guests, including Walt Disney. A brief history of the Class 22 diesel-hydraulic locomotives, from their introduction and technical aspects to their withdrawal by 1972.The British Railways ‘Pilot Scheme’ orders of 1955 included six Type 2 diesel-hydraulic locomotives built by the North British Locomotive Co., these being introduced during 1959 for use on the Western Region. Without operational experience, a further fifty-two locomotives were delivered between 1959 and 1962. The fleet survived intact until 1968, when approximately half of the class was withdrawn as a result of declining traffic levels across the UK, with successive National Traction Plans progressively selecting the less successful, non-standard and ‘numerically challenged’ classes for removal from traffic. All fifty-eight locomotives were withdrawn by New Years Day, 1972.This book, the first of two, sets the scene surrounding the short history of the Class 22s covering the introduction of the fleet, technical aspects, appearance design, delivery and acceptance testing, works histories and allocations. When talking of model railways, the name Hornby means different things to different people. To some, it is the large 0 gauge metal trains mainly of the interwar period. To others, it is the 00 scale Hornby Dublo trains which were at their peak in the 1950s. To modelers, it is the highly detailed models they find in shops today. While they share a brand name, they are all very different products. The Hornby brand has been owned by four different companies and while it has been carried by three quite different systems, they have had three things in common – they have been British, they have been quality products and they have all carried the name ‘Hornby’ with pride.Here, in one volume, is an account of the fortunes, successes and occasional failures of the Hornby model railway brand.
