The Mosquito Confederation is the first historical monograph to offer a thorough, chronological narrative of the rise and decline of the Mosquito Confederation: a powerful alliance of Amerindian and African-descended peoples that dominated much of Central America’s Caribbean coast throughout the eighteenth century. This study addresses a straightforward set of questions: Who were the principal actors facilitating Mosquito expansion? What specific practices did they implement? And how did these processes shape the competing Spanish and English conquests in the region? The specific answers to these questions vary over place and time, yet the overarching argument is that the rise and decline of the Mosquito Confederation―a process that depended far more on the novel practices of Mosquito leaders than on outside, colonial influences―was the driving force shaping imperial outcomes in the region. This research derives from a substantial body of previously uncited sources, especially from the National Archive of Costa Rica. Since Mosquito fleets routinely stopped in Costa Rican ports to trade and gather supplies, the Costa Rican archival record is both uniquely large and uniquely insightful. During the American Civil War and the years immediately following, thousands of Confederate sympathizers and former soldiers left the southern United States to seek exile in other lands. Evidence suggests that more Confederate soldiers went to British Honduras, presently known as Belize, than any other single site. This work is an in-depth look at the settlements established by former Confederates--what lured the Confederates there, what the trip from New Orleans was like, what life was like for immigrants in Belize City, the settlements at Toledo, New Richmond, northern British Honduras, Manattee and other settlements, and what Belize City was like at the height of the immigrant influx. In 13 Colors of the Honduran Resistance, feminist author and activist Melissa Cardoza tells 13 stories about women from the Honduran resistance in the aftermath of the June 28th, 2009 coup against President Manuel Zelaya. On that day, led by a U.S.-trained General, the Honduran military barged in to the president’s house and took him in his pajamas into a helicopter, flying him first to a U.S. base in Honduras and then on to Costa Rica. It was the first coup of the 21st century in Central America. The military and Honduran oligarchy quickly imposed an interim government, undid most of the progressive reforms underway, and passed hundreds of concessions to corporate interests. To the surprise of the coup’s backers, however, thousands of people around the country spontaneously came out into the streets. Their numbers and the depth of their vision and commitment kept growing during hundreds of days of consecutive protest, with fearless women at the forefront.
