This book makes available the previously unpublished correspondence of Michael Keane, an eighteenth-century Irish attorney general of St Vincent. From Ballylongford, Co. Kerry, Keane rose through the ranks of colonial society and established a West Indian fortune. He was a protégé of the earl of Shelburne (who served briefly as prime minister) and was associated with American independence, a call for Irish equality within the United Kingdom, and a desire for the acceptance of British Catholics. Indeed, on his deathbed Keane insisted that he was ‘wholly Irish,’ thereby rejecting any notion of an Anglo-Irish identity or association within the Protestant Church of Ireland. As his letters reflect, Keane worked on behalf of a wide range of Irish merchants, Irish-West Indian planters, and other Irish people who had settled into English society. Keane’s Irish-West Indian odyssey brought him first to the British colony of Barbados and after 1763 to the Ceded Islands, which Great Britain acquired at the conclusion of the Seven Years War. From his base in St Vincent, he founded sugar estates that he christened ‘Liberty Lodge’ and ‘Bow-wood’ in honour of his patron Shelburne. As his correspondence shows, he worked on behalf of Irish Atlantic interests that had become dispersed throughout the colonial world, including Catholic, Protestant, and Non-Conformist merchants, as well as absentee Irish-West Indian planters and merchants in Barbados, Nevis, and St Kitts, who looked to him to protect their interests in the colony. In The Black Carib Wars, Christopher Taylor offers the most thoroughly researched history of the struggle of the Garifuna people to preserve their freedom on the island of St. Vincent. Today, thousands of Garifuna people live in Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua and the United States, preserving their unique culture and speaking a language that directly descends from that spoken in the Caribbean at the time of Columbus. All trace their origins back to St. Vincent where their ancestors were native Carib Indians and shipwrecked or runaway West African slaves―hence the name by which they were known to French and British colonialists: Black Caribs. In the 1600s they encountered Europeans as adversaries and allies. But from the early 1700s, white people, particularly the French, began to settle on St. Vincent. The treaty of Paris in 1763 handed the island to the British who wanted the Black Caribs' land to grow sugar. Conflict was inevitable, and in a series of bloody wars punctuated by uneasy peace the Black Caribs took on the might of the British Empire. Over decades leaders such as Tourouya, Bigot, and Chatoyer organized the resistance of a society which had no central authority but united against the external threat. Finally, abandoned by their French allies, they were defeated, and the survivors deported to Central America in 1797. The story begins in South America, where people who spoke Arawak-an Amerindian language fashioned a culture based on yuca or cassava farming, hunting and fishing in a dense forest cut by many rivers. By the year 1000 AD some of them had moved up the Orinoco River to the Caribbean Sea and it's islands, where they established a new way of life. Later other people, whom history has called "Caribs", moved into the Caribbean out of the same areas. The Caribs welcomed and protected the Negro refugees, and in time allowed them to marry the Caribs. The Africans then adopted the languages, culture and traditions of the Yellow Island Caribs. The intermarriage brought about a rapid growth of hybrid mixture of African and Yellow Indians Caribs. From this union arose a half-bred race possessing some Caribs and African characteristics to which the name Garifuna or Black Carib was given. Read more

From Shakers to Spiritual Baptists examines the factors and circumstances that led to the passage of the Shaker Prohibition Ordinance that declared the Shaker religion illegal in 1912. It then traces the efforts made to repeal that Ordinance. The focus is on the Shakers’ struggle for survival and for their right to worship in the manner they deemed fit. Central to this were the environment and conditions that emerged in St. Vincent after the riots of 1935. George McIntosh, who was one of the main political personalities to have come on to the political scene after the riots, is depicted as one of the chief architects of the efforts to have the Ordinance repealed. Some attention is paid to the origin of the religion known at first as ‘The Wilderness People'. This account of our only known indigenous religion should be of interest to all members of that religion and of Vincentians generally, as the forces against which the Shakers had to contend were ones that helped to shape so much of our history and society. The stories from our Indian Elders of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) are finally being told in this book! There has not been any significant publication covering the history of the Indians in SVG except for limited academic research and articles in various media dealing primarily with a short time frame or a particular location. Many have done brief research into this topic and dabbled in genealogy. Even in this 21st Century (2018), many countries, the world over, still have never heard of Union Island, the third largest islands of the Grenadines. Is this a surprise to historians in the Caribbean? “The answer here is an unequivocal No!” Said Leslie Jennings, a historian, and third generation immigrant from the island of Trinidad, West Indies. “The Caribbean Sea is comprised of more than 700 Islands, and in a wider sense, the mainland countries of Venezuela, Guyana, Belize and French Guiana are a part of this Tropical atmosphere.” She continued. “Every island have a past, or are linked to another larger island or islands that share a common history.” Such is the case with Union Island, a 3.5 square mile landmass that was deemed the epicenter of an archipelago of 32 small islands. And although Union Island’s history is intrinsically linked to Grenada and St. Vincent, two larger islands in the region, Union Island’s history, for the most part, is an independent one that dates back to the mid 18th Century.During the 17th and 18th Centuries, Union Island was a hub for the French privateers that traversed the waters of the Grenadines on their voyages to the larger Islands in the region. And there are a lot of informative and intriguing information that is derived from the Caribbean during the early European presence. Unfortunately, the history of these islands in the vicinity (St. Vincent, Grenada, St. Lucia, and Dominica) was vaguely documented and was never taught in the schools of the Caribbean. Instead, the students have been force-fed the history of Europe and the might of the British Empire. The contents of the history textbooks at the schools and institutions in the Caribbean were pro-Europe; the students were daily served this menu as part of their intellectual diets. No data of St. Vincent & the Grenadines or Africa, the origin of the forefathers and foremothers of the current African generations was ever mentioned in the history books. Instead, the British Empire was lauded. Names such as Queen Isabella, King Ferdinand, John Hawkins, Walter Raleigh, Admiral Penn, General Venables, Francis Drake, and Henry Morgan were revered. Many of them were knighted “Sir” regardless of the taints and notorieties that are attached to their names. Regrettably, history teaches that these personalities should be respect and admired nonetheless.Fortuitously, for Union Island, its complete history is depicted in details in a new book Union Island History -Servitude, Metayage, and Civilization. In this intriguing text, the history dates back to the 1750s when this 3.5 Sq. Miles landmass was strong-armed from the Carib Indians by the French. The French proposed the cultivation of the cotton crop on the island based on the climate and the evanescence of its annual rainfall. Cotton, they thought, would have generated a sizable income in Europe. But free or cheap labor must first be put into place for the cultivation of the proposed cotton crop. Immediately, 350 Africans have been ushered in bondage from the west coast of Africa and were used as slaves for the first time on this tiny island.But with the principle of retributive justice or the doctrine of inevitable consequence being expressed in only a few years, the French ownership of Union Island was short lived. Their rulership was vehemently interrupted with the intervention of the Treaty of Paris in 1763, which give rise to the British dominance in the region. In reprisal, the French’s wrath and resilience were felt a few years later when they reclaimed the neighboring island of Grenada. Consequently, the Grenadines were impacted negatively by the resurgence of the French in such proximity. To bring about tranquility in the region, which was rife with mayhem, another agreement (Treaty of Versailles) was drafted in the year 1783.
