Jarman's public image is that of a film-maker of genius, whose work, dwelling on themes of sexuality and violence, became a byword for controversy. But the private man was the creator of his own garden-paradise in an environment that many might think was more of a hell than a heaven - in the flat, bleak, often desolate expanse of shingle that faces the Dungeness nuclear power station. Jarman, a passionate gardener from childhood, combined his painter's eye, his horticultural expertise and his ecological convictions to produce a landscape which combined the flints, shells and driftwood of Dungeness; sculptures made from stones, old tools and found objects; the area's indigenous plants; and shrubs and flowers introduced by Jarman himself. Christopher Neve’s classic book is a journey into the imagination through the English landscape. How is it that artists, by thinking in paint, have come to regard the landscape as representing states of mind? ‘Painting’, says Neve, ‘is a process of finding out, and landscape can be its thesis.’ What he is writing is not precisely art history: it is about pictures, about landscape and about thought. Over the years, he was able to have discussions with many of the thirty or so artists he focuses on, the inspiration for the book having come from his talks with Ben Nicholson; and he has immersed himself in their work, their countryside, their ideas. Thomas Haytor Mawson (1881-1933) began designing gardens in the 1890s. He forged his distinctive style - solid formality round the house with foreground terraces and balustrades - in the Lake District, where his genius allowed the garden to open out into the landscape. From humble beginnings he was soon the most sought-after garden and landscape designer of the day. He could name crowned heads of Europe as his clients and friends, as well as self-made industrialists such as Lord Leverhulme and Andrew Carnegie. In 1908 he was chosen to design the Peace Gardens at The Hague. Mawson, who was a great teacher and advocate for landscape architecture as a profession, published five editions of The Art and Craft of Garden Making between 1900 and 1926. His Civic Art, reflecting his great interest in the design of towns and public parks, came out in 1911. This is the first full biography of this energetic and prolific landscape architect. It is full of new material and images collected from Mawson's relatives as well as from public and private sources. The author took her camera throughout the United Kingdom and Europe and travelled across Canada to discover the full story of Thomas Mawson's life and work. Read more

The best implemented urban development plans are those that command public support. A key aspect of the process for planning and controlling development is the way that individuals and organizations participate in the decisions made by local planning authorities.This book compares public participation in a selection of European counties. Using the UK, France, and Sweden as examples of alternative approaches to urban planning, the author examines public participation both at the planning and development control stages. Based on interviews with local resident groups, chambers of commerce, developers, and planners, as well as he analysis of planning and development decisions. Barlow argues that the approach to urban planning influences the way that public participation occurs. In the UK, there are more opportunities for the public to intervene in the development process. In France, there is a growing use of legal mechanisms to protest development decisions, although participation in planning remains constrained.
