The original editor was a G. H. Fra. D.D.C.F. who translated ancient texts from French, Hebrew, and Latin, but was unable to complete his labors because of the martial assaults of the Four Great Princes. Crowley was then asked to step in and finish what the previous author had begun. Traditionally, S. L. MacGregor Mathers is credited as the translator of this edition, and Crowley is given the title of editor. El gnosticismo contiene los términos y motivos básicos de la cosmología de Platón, así como las cualidades místicas del budismo. Platón estaba impregnado de la mitología griega, y el mito gnóstico de la creación tiene elementos que le son propios. Tanto la cosmología como el misticismo dentro del gnosticismo presentan una interpretación de la existencia y las enseñanzas de Cristo, por lo que los gnósticos se consideran una secta cristiana. A los seguidores gnósticos se les insta a buscar dentro de sí mismos la verdad y el espíritu de Cristo oculto, dormido en sus almas. El grito de guerra se puede resumir en las palabras del Evangelio gnóstico de Tomás, versículo 3:Jesús dijo: Si los que os guían os dicen: Mirad, el Reino está en el cielo, entonces las aves del cielo entrarían antes que vosotros. Si os dicen: Está en el mar, entonces los peces del mar entrarían delante de vosotros. Pero el Reino de Dios existe dentro de ti y existe fuera de ti. Aquellos que llegan a conocerse (reconocerse) lo encontrarán, y cuando lleguéis a conoceros a vosotros mismos os conoceréis y os daréis cuenta de que sois los hijos del Padre Viviente. The Hermetica are texts attributed to the legendary Hellenistic figure Hermes Trismegistus, a syncretic combination of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth. The fifteen tractates of the Corpus Hermeticum, along with the Perfect Sermon or Asclepius, are the foundation documents of the Hermetic tradition. Written by unknown authors in Egypt sometime before the end of the third century C.E., they were part of a once substantial literature attributed to the mythic figure of Hermes Trismegistus, a Hellenistic fusion of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian god Thoth.The treatises we now call the Corpus Hermeticum were collected into a single volume in Byzantine times, and a copy of this volume survived to come into the hands of Lorenzo de Medici's agents in the fifteenth century. The treatises divide up into several groups. The first (CH I), the "Poemandres", is the account of a revelation given to Hermes Trismegistus by the being Poemandres or "Man-Shepherd", an expression of the universal Mind. The next eight (CH II-IX), the "General Sermons", are short dialogues or lectures discussing various basic points of Hermetic philosophy. There follows the "Key" (CH X), a summary of the General Sermons, and after this a set of four tractates - "Mind unto Hermes", "About the Common Mind", "The Secret Sermon on the Mountain", and the "Letter of Hermes to Asclepius" (CH XI-XIV) - touching on the more mystical aspects of Hermeticism.
