Based on primary archival research and published sources, the proposed work represents a focused, and modern assessment of the raising, equipping and composition of the standing army of Charles II, and the role played by the garrison of Tangier between 1661 and 1684. When Charles landed in Dover in 1660 he inherited two regular armies, both owing him allegiance - the New Model (by then regular or standing army) in England under Monck; and the force of exiled royalists in Flanders and the garrison of Dunkirk. Neither army was in particularly rude health, being much in arrears of pay, and although the former remained on paper an effective power, its morale was broken by the events leading to the Restoration. The latter (Charles II's 'forgotten army'), was a body of Irish, Scottish and English soldiers in exile, fighting with the Spanish, and habituated to periods of hardship and privation. The acquisition of the Moroccan city of Tangier via the marriage agreement between Charles II and Catherine of Braganza, daughter of John IV of Portugal, in May 1661 brought about a period of English occupation, which lasted until 1684. England garrisoned and fortified the city against hostile Barbary forces.The English Garrison of Tangier examines in detail the raising, equipping and composition of Charles II's army, with particular emphasis on the occupation and siege of Tangier, during a period regarded today by some historians as one of the emergence of 'British colonialism' and trade, but also within the wider military, political and strategic context of expansionism and warfare in Europe and beyond. Governor Percy Kirke's Out-Letter Book, here transcribed verbatim and annotated, covers the terminal decline of English Tangier, ending just before the arrival of Lord Dartmouth's expedition charged with demolishing the town and evacuating all personnel. It contains 152 official letters mostly addressed to the Tangier Committee, the subcommittee of the Privy Council responsible for Tangerine affairs, and Sir Leoline Jenkins, secretary of state for the south. Although all matters of civilian and military administration, from the essential to the trivial, came within the governor's purview – there was little delegation – the weight of Kirke's correspondence traces the decay of both the town's military fabric and the soldiers' morale and effectiveness, and the impossibility of reaching a satisfactory modus vivendi with the leaders of the besieging Moroccan armed forces. North Africa was one of the richest parts of the Roman Empire, the agricultural powerhouse of the Mediterranean. It was also home to some of the emperor’s biggest imperial estates, and prosperous cities of all kinds. Its loss to the Vandals in the first half of the 5th century AD was the mortal blow which precipitated the fall of the western empire, and set the eastern empire back for decades. Its reconquest then became an obsession with each new emperor in Constantinople. Time and again the eastern Romans failed in this goal, until Justinian I finally succeeded in the AD 530s. Although North Africa’s restoration to the world of Rome only lasted a short time, it has widely been regarded as a positive development.However, new research – published here for the first time – shows that post-Roman North Africa thrived under the Vandals. To them it was Vandal heaven, a place where they found a way as the new incumbent elite to live comfortably alongside the late Roman inhabitants, despite their different interpretations of Christianity. Together, the two cultures flourished. When the eastern Romans – now styled Byzantines – returned, they weren’t welcome. This is evidenced in the surviving built environments, namely chains of small forts along the frontier and interior, where the Byzantines used mounted troops to keep an unhappy local population under control. Dr Elliott presents a brand-new interpretation of post-Roman North Africa, providing a compelling argument for how the region today came to be part of the Arab world, in contrast to the regions along the northern Mediterranean freeboard which maintain their Roman-ness to this day.
