Christopher Columbus was not the first to discover the Americas, but his voyages led to European exploration of the New World. Rich in resources and natural beauty, the Americas were irresistible to gold-hungry conquistadors. The newcomers gave little thought to those who had called the lands their home, and exploration soon came to signify conquest. The New World -- and the lives of its inhabitants -- would be changed forever. Read more
Bird In a Cage
sogii Stephanie Francis
This story came to me during my days working with my Sister, Andrealisa. She and I were on a journey of our own reconciliation when the Universe brought us back on the same path. This time together was to help her understand my ontology, epistemology, axiology along with some of our methodology (collectively Wabanaki), for the sake of supporting emerging indigenous evaluators. Yet this period moved me into a time of re-awakening for myself."The Bird In a Cage" was inspired by the "bird in the cage" that has been an analogy for many stories of oppression. From Mya Angelou, to Paul McCartney's "Black Bird", my story is meant to share the experience of trauma in a non-threatening manner. This particular story about Cage #015, is a story that was meant to be shared only orally. When shared orally, emotions and reactions can be met with empathy and understanding, no matter who is the Listener. This would go to support the belief that StoryTeller is a sacred and serious title or position in Wabanaki culture. Storytelling can be described as a helping skill. It is used to transmit knowledge, which eventually turns to wisdom for the Listener. For myself, it has become a way to decolonize the impacts of trauma on Indigenous People. It was important for me to share the message of "Its not your fault/Its not our fault" when faced with the disparities and challenges we are faced with today as Wabanaki People. In the spirit of storytelling, I was able to embrace my place as a storyteller. I have been instructed to teach people about trauma, and this story marks the beginning of this new role I've accepted. To learn more about my journey and how I've come to understand some teachings, follow my Instragram at SogiiSteph Read more
Calico Captive
Elizabeth George Speare
From a Newbery Medal–winning author, an “exciting novel” about a colonial girl’s experience during the French and Indian War (Saturday Review). In the year 1754, the stillness of Charlestown, New Hampshire, is shattered by the terrifying cries of an Indian raid. Young Miriam Willard, on a day that had promised new happiness, finds herself instead a captive on a forest trail, caught up in the ebb and flow of the French and Indian War. It is a harrowing march north. Miriam can only force herself to the next stopping place, the next small portion of food, the next icy stream to be crossed. At the end of the trail waits a life of hard work and, perhaps, even a life of slavery. Mingled with her thoughts of Phineas Whitney, her sweetheart on his way to Harvard, is the crying of her sister’s baby, Captive, born on the trail. Miriam and her companions finally reach Montreal, a city of shifting loyalties filled with the intrigue of war, and here, by a sudden twist of fortune, Miriam meets the prominent Du Quesne family, who introduce her to a life she has never imagined. Based on an actual narrative diary published in 1807, Calico Captive skillfully reenacts an absorbing facet of history. “Vital and vivid, this short novel based on the actual captivity of a pre-Revolutionary girl of Charlestown, New Hampshire, presents American history with force and verve.” —Kirkus Reviews Read more

Anne of Green Gables
L. M. Montgomery
When Marilla Cuthbert and her brother, Matthew, decide to adopt a child from a distant orphanage, they don't get quite what they bargained for. The child who awaits them at the tiny Bright River train station is not the strapping young boy they'd imagined--someone to help Matthew work the fields of their small farm--but rather a freckle-faced, redheaded girl named Anne (with an e, if you please). Matthew and Marilla may not be sure about Anne, but Anne takes one look at Prince Edward Island's red clay roads and the Cuthberts' snug white farmhouse with its distinctive green gables and decides that she's home at last. But will she be able to convince Marilla and Matthew to let her stay? Armed with only a battered carpetbag and a boundless imagination, Anne charms her way into the Cuthberts' hearts--and into the hearts of readers as well. She truly is, in the words of Mark Twain, "the dearest and most lovable child in fiction since the immortal Alice." Read more
